LPA Fee Increase Looms – What You Need to Know Before 17 November.
If you’ve been meaning to put your Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) in place, this is your nudge. From 17 November 2025, the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) will increase the registration fee from £82 to £92 per LPA application. Most people make two LPAs (Property & Financial Affairs, and Health & Welfare), so that’s an extra £20 per person if you miss the window. Source: GOV.UK
What’s Changing — The Key Facts
- Current fee: £82 per LPA (until 16 November 2025).
- New fee (from 17 November 2025): £92 per LPA. GOV.UK
- Repeat / resubmission fee: increases from £41 to £46 on the same date. GOV.UK
Context Matters: Fees Have Been Higher Before
For perspective, LPA registration used to cost £110 per LPA until the government reduced it to £82 on 1 April 2017. So while this rise is real, it isn’t unprecedented — it’s still below historic levels. GOV.UK (2017)
Exemptions & Reductions
- Full exemption: Some means-tested benefits qualify you to pay no fee.
- 50% remission: If the donor’s gross income is under £12,000/year, the fee is halved. That’s £41 before 17 November, rising to £46 afterwards. GOV.UK
Why Act Now
- Lock in the lower fee: Save £20 per person if you’re making both LPAs. With bills ever increasing, it is important to save where we can and not over pay.
- Avoid delays: Registration takes time — and errors cause rejections. Waiting risks missing the old fee and, worse, being unprotected if capacity is lost.
- Protect your family: Without LPAs, loved ones may need the Court of Protection. That’s slower, costlier, and out of your control.
